Mentorship and Lineage

I have been profoundly influenced by the many teachers and mentorships I’ve had throughout my life. Folks I’ve related to through their literature, through personal relationships as their student, as their peer, and through my ongoing education. I deeply value the folks in this work who come before me, who paved the way and who made my work possible today. I pay homage to them, extend gratitude and celebrate their contributions and life.
  • Baba Blair Anderson for his generosity, wisdom and friendship and for looking out for me and passing on his own history in a formative time early on in my studentship

  • Christian Burns for teaching me the power of touch and improvisation in a dance context that felt like it expanded to include my whole life

  • Zach Dacuck for his personal ongoing mentorship in bodywork and somatic coaching

  • Alexandra Beller for her personal mentorship in pedagogy, choreography and artistry as well as her contributions to the field of somatics and movement, including her work with the Laban Bartinieff Institute

  • Ilana Grostern for her personal mentorship in somatic coaching especially concerning the Nervous System

  • Audre Lorde for her work on the erotic, queer theory, emotional coherence and anti-racism especially in Sister Outsider, and her essay “The Erotic as Power”

  • Bell Hooks for her work on anti-racism, feminism, and community organizing in a way that humanizes, especially in “Teaching to Transgress”

  • Adrienne Maree brown for her work on pleasure, anti-racism, love and belonging, her poetic contributions and guiding visionary wisdom, especially in “Emergent Strategies” and “Pleasure Activism”

  • Staci Haines for her incredible contribution to the world of somatics and trauma informed approaches that consider social and cultural accessibility and influence, especially in “The Politics of Trauma”
